Ski selection

I have skied a few times and feel I will continue. I have taken a lesson and am OK at best. I have ski boots and usually rent skis but am thinking about buying a local pair off Craigs list and need assistance in the selection. I am 5'8" and weigh 185lbs. Can you please suggest one of the following.

Blizzard 170 107/70/172 $100

Dynastar D'stinct 172 w/ look bindings $150

Stocki 175 w/ Tie bindings $175

K2 Reflex 66" $25

Head Peak 170 $175

and there may still be a set of 170 Head Icon tt66 available

I already have a ski trip set for 1/8 and would prefer not to rent again.

What do people suggest?

Welcome to Epic Ski.  Unfortunately, you haven't provided one very important bit of information, namely where do you ski.  Ski recommendations are based on the skier's experience level and where they normally ski.  Craigs List can be a dangerous place to buy skis, unless you really know what to look for.  The bindings on older skis might not be on the indemnified list which means no ski shop will adjust them.  If there's a Play It Again Sports store near you, go see what they have.  You might also try any local ski shops to see if they have any used skis.

What mtcyclist said.  Though, at your stage, I'd just rent for the season (as in a full season rental from a ski shop, not renting each time at the resort).  You probably don't know what you like - groomers, bumps, trees, etc. - and your ability is hopefully rapidly advancing, so best just to rent a general front side ski from a shop.

I ski the slopes at Wintergreen in Charlottesville Virginia. It runs about $50.00 to rent the skis there and plan on skiing at least three times this season. I thought it would be more economical and easier to purchase at around $100.00 to 150.00.

So is your ski trip on 1/8 to Wintergreen?  How did you buy your boots?  Also craigslist?  Which trails have you skied so far at Wintergreen?  My home mountain is Massanutten but I ski Wintergreen midweek 1-2 times a season.

Have you checked the rental prices at the ski shop on the way to Wintergreen?  Usually less expensive than on the mountain.  $50 sounds pretty high but I haven't rented skis in the southeast for quite a while.  You might also ask if it's still possible to do a season lease.  Although with only 3-4 more ski days, that may not save you money either.

Assuming you are looking in VA craigslist, you won't find particularly good skis.  Often the ones being sold are pretty old.
