We're headed to SLC on 11 Jan for a few days and planned to ski the Cottonwood areas, While there has been some very nice snowfall recently, making for great skiing at many of the Utah resorts, it looks like it's going to not only be dry over the next 1-2 weeks but also relatively warm. I understand that this is not unusual for Jan and would not expect a great deal of deterioration of the snowpack given the low sun angle, even with some above-freezing days. Thought I would ask those who ski the Cottonwoods regularly if that's been their experience though.
Another question for Wasatch regulars relates to where to ski in the general SLC area if the weather turns out as predicted - dry and warm. As mentioned above, we tentatively planned to ski the Cottonwoods, but that is because of lodging (we're staying in Midvale). I'd guess that if the weather over the next 10 days is as predicted, the PC areas, which already have less snow, will have somewhat worse conditions than the windward areas and so would not be a good alternative. What about places further north such as Snowbasin and Powder Mountain? We will have a car, which would make them doable.
We can and will play things by ear, but I wanted to get a sense of what to expect.
