Hoping to get a few days of skiing before returning to work next week. Looking at the weather and conditions it's hard to know which mountain will have the right combination of decent snow, smaller crowds, and affordability. I'm considering Smuggs or Jay Peak, possibly Wildcat.

Hence the attached poll. Which mountain do you put your money on for 2 days of enjoyable skiing?

Northern Vermont is showing chances of snow every day from New Year's Day through the weekend...  Northern New Hampshire is showing chances of snow just on the weekend.  Go with the odds...

That said, I'm bringing rock skis and very sharp edges yet again...

Not needed - unless you just have to ski National and the Goat.

Ummm.  Isn't that kinda the point?

By the way, the day bus that picks up 5 miles from my house is going to Stowe on Saturday, so I will probably be there.

I am thinking of bringing the slalom skis that I haven't used in over 5 years.  Not that there was anything wrong with my Coombas on Sugarbush's refrozen goodness, but the slaloms might help me focus on some weak spots in my technique.

Then bring your rock skis.

I doubt that good snow, small crowds and inexpensive are things that go together this coming weekend.  Two words to consider - snowmaking and grooming.  If the resorts you are considering don't have lots of both and know how to do them, look elsewhere.

December skiing was quite good until just before Christmas.  Then it rained for 2 days and froze.  No one has had more than an inch of snow since the rain, so I suspect it sucks everywhere.

There is a great deal of suckiness, sure.

No, it's "refrozen goodness". Did you lose your copy of the program?

"Packed powder," I believe, is the term of art.

We're skiing Sunapee today and it totally doesn't suck in most places.

Crowd control.
