Largest midwest ski resort plans expansion, Lutsen, MN to replace gondola

Big plans were announced in December 2014 by the co-owners of Lutsen.  Never realized Lutsen has 1000 skiable acres on four peaks, that's pretty big in the flatlands where 1000 ft vertical is a relatively high number.  Long range plans are to add several hundred acres.

December 23, 2014 - LUTSEN, MN. Positioning Lutsen Mountains to meet skier's expectations, family co-owners, Charles Skinner and Tom Rider, announced the replacement of their iconic 4-passenger, 45 year old gondola with a new 8-passenger, $7 million gondola, from Doppelmayr, the world leader in ski lifts.

"We are thrilled to take this next step forward in fulfilling our vision for Lutsen Mountains' future," said Charles Skinner. "As a family-owned business, we've carefully developed and implemented a master plan to enhance visitor services and skier opportunity. The gondola purchase is one of two steps we are taking in 2015."

6 new runs off 2 new lifts of the back side of Moose Mountain.  These would be short steep runs like the current back side ones but without the long catwalk back to the lift.

4 new runs of the east side of Eagle mountain down toward lake superior.  Lodge at the bottom of this area with a lift back to the top of Eagle.  This terrain looks excellent, FYI.  There could be some great glade skiing cut through this.

Nearly doubling the current skiing size of Moose Mountain front side, including more tree/glade skiing and a new lodge at the bottom of moose mountain's new terrain.

They are still waiting for approval of the plan from USFS.

interesting.

I keep promising to get up to Lutzen but for me, drive time from Iowa puts me within 3 hrs of Co .. which I would trade given possible cold up north. But I do ponder the option in spring if I can work it into a business trip in Minneapolis .. then a drive wouldn't be so bad given the start point.

I can't recall when they closed this last season but think it was late, into May which for me, mid to late April may work.

Mountain views are great but I understand Lutzen has some nice views of the lake ..

This is great news for upper mid-west skiers. It's interesting to see the local resorts try to combat the stream of people heading out west to ski 5-10 days per year and get them to the local resorts more.
