Volkl G4's from the early 2000's

While at a local ski shop I was looking at the consignment rack and found an old pair of Volkl G4's which a tall friend of mine had up for sale (198cm, I'm 6'9 myself).  He cut me a screaming deal (free) since I didn't have a pair of skis in the quiver (currently looking a few different skis) and I needed something for next week up in the Sierras.  I'm pretty stoked with the hookup but have no idea how they'll ski!

So for those of you who remember these older skis, what can you share?  How did they ski?  Any comparisons to what's out there in the Volkl lineup now?  I did find it funny that all the old descriptions I found online made it sound like these were really wide back then but they're pretty skinny by today's standards (118-83-106).

-Thanks, Todd

Yes, the G4 was Volkl's 'charger' big mountain ski... times change. They will have a GS-like feel, they should be fun but skis have made exponential improvements in the past 15 years.

Burly big ski land... One of the best in it's time. The caveat being the latter.

Sounds like a good fit for me.

I skied the 198 G4 when it was a hot ski.  I liked it a lot at the time.  There are many better skis out there now.  It sounds like the price was right.  I would ski them and have fun.

What bindings are on them, can they be worked on by a shop ? You may need ti buy new bindings.

Check that out before its to late.

Great ski, probably the best of that era. Really long production run from G40,41,G4, thru 724.

I don't recall the specific binding make/model but the shop gave said they were "on the list" of being acceptable.
