I am planning a (3) ski-day getaway over the January MLK long weekend (+ extra day) from Seattle with my 20-year old son. We have a bit of drive getting to the places I'm considering but we don't mind if the skiing is worthwhile & we meet the goal of hitting some new areas. I prefer off-piste, son likes off-piste + terrain parks, we hate crowds (spoiled from many Big Sky trips), and we in general enjoy Canada (bonus for him is he can join me for a beer in a pub). We have skied several BC interior areas already (Apex, Big White, Sun Peaks, Silverstar, Revelstoke, Red, Whitewater, and Kicking Horse), and I want to add to the list with this trip.
With this in mind, I would love some feedback on the options I am considering...
A) Day at Red Mt (haven't been since new chair added) then overnight in Cranbrook to day trip to Panorama and Fernie.
B) Go directly to & stay in Cranbrook for day trips each at Kimberly, Panorama, and Fernie.
C) Do Red, Fernie, then Whitefish MT (been to Whitefish several times but son has not).
Fernie is definitely on my to-do list but I've heard it can be busy with Calgary weekenders. Do we need to avoid it on weekends? I suppose that question depends on whether or not they had a recent powder dump.
Panorama looks interesting but is a 2-hr drive to/from Cranbrook. If worth it for the skiing, I would do it. Son Mt. biked there once so it would be fun to return in the snow.
Kimberly is the least appealing but I'm always game to ski a place I've never done. Also, it would work well as the first ski day after the long drive from Seattle (option "B" above).
Any feedback on any of these plans/areas is appreciated. If there are any discount lift ticket options (i.e, Costco, etc. ?) that can sway me as well. I do have a 25% off voucher for Red from a ski show a few months back.
