Sun Valley Dec. 18-21

Great early season conditions at SV! 8 lifts and 55 trails open on Baldy on the 18th; today I see that it's 11 lifts and 95 trails. Seattle Ridge and the bowls opened the 19th. It snowed lightly the entire time; we picked up a couple inches each day, then 8 inches overnight Saturday; the lucky folks that are there today got another 14" since yesterday. Sunday morning was the busiest I've seen it--a powder day and the Sunday before Xmas. But it still wasn't crowded compared to a lot ski resorts. We go since the pre-holiday packages are so good ($79/pp for room and lift ticket, so basically you either ski or stay for free depending on how you look at it), so even if early season conditions are not great, like last year, it's worth it. Then we leave on Sunday before Xmas, when prices rise and crowds (such as they are there) move in. We stayed at the Sun Valley Inn for the first time since the Lodge is under renovation until June; it is fine and has some of the charm of the Lodge, but it's still not the Lodge. It does have a hot pool identical to the Lodge, and these are the best hot pools I've ever been in. The resort does the tree lighting/Santa/etc on Saturday night, and they do such a nice job with the holidays--the decorations, kids skating to Peanuts music at the ice rink in front of the lodge, horses pulling sleighs to Trail Creek Cabin for dinner. Doing their pre holiday package, I feel like I get the good parts of a ski trip at Xmas, without the crowds and expense of being there over the actual holiday.

I didn't take many photos because it was snowing and viz was low. Here's just one snowy one from the River Run base.

I got face shots all over the place Yesterday! Untracked didn't last long, but the tracked stuff was also really good!

As of today, all lifts open and about 95% of named runs. Real windy, though.

It's been a couple years - love that place, the lodge, the history. Your picture is great!

What a great Xmas week treat. We'll either be back in Jan or Feb.

I am not the OP, but here:  https://www.sunvalley.com/deals

Unfortunately, not as good a deal in February as early season.

As you probably figured out by following the link above it is a resort deal. Availability for the mid-winter package was VERY limited last time I checked. Since the Lodge is closed for the big remodel, only the Inn is open, and so availability this winter is half of what it typically is (the Inn and the Lodge are the only 2 resort hotels). We usually don't have trouble booking the mid winter package, but we usually do book it in fall, since they sell out. Even though the mid winter package is more ($162/pp) I still think it's a good deal. It also includes free airport transportation (I know you'll probably drive, but for those of us that fly this saves a lot) and free ski storage at the base.

Liftopia often has SV tickets (just checked, they have deals for every day in Feb right now), and the motels in town--the Tamarack, the Best Western Kentwood--are perfectly fine. I'm not sure if the motels ever offer packages.

The resort also has a spring package, good for late March to close, that's usually only $79/pp/per night.

Thanks

Sun Valley typically has its best snow in El Nino years- good timing. It's a seriously fun ski hill. And town!!

If anyone wants to keep posting SV photos throughout the season, I'll look at them. :)

Our Snowbasin passes include 3 free days at Sun Valley. It's really tempting! Only a 4ish hour drive for us.

GO! If it were only 4 hours for me, we'd have a place there.

Anyone take advantage of the $40 lift tickets on Sunday (and 50% off hotels all weekend)? I wish I'd known about it in advance, but we'd already bought tickets through Liftopia. I met some folks from Boise who'd never come up but did for the deal. I know it was a benefit for the Fly SV Alliance but it seems like a really good way to get new visitors. Nice conditions, somewhat spring like but not too much so. Perfect for sitting out at the Roundhouse patio at the end of my ski day.
