A Miserable Day at Monarch Mountain CO 12-15-14

Talk about an ugly day at the slopes. For starters the skiing was free with two canned goods for donation to the local food bank. 2nd There was only 20 inches of new snow the past 48 hours. Finally I never had to wait to get on the lift more than maybe 2 minutes but usually just skied right to the chair.

Of course I'm joking and it was a great day and the full trip report is at my blog

I'm new here, so I'm not really sure of the rules and have a question...

Is it OK to say that I hate you a little bit?

I wasn't sure if someone getting into something that looks so great was considered a good enough reason to hate someone; If it's not, I'll adjust my attitude to a modest dis-like. ;)

yes, what a horribly cruel person you are!  sadly I must typically live vicariously through others tales of fortunes!

hum, now I only need to check out Monarch ....too bad it's not on a path I'd normally take....

I think it is really cool that they do this, and it looks like Karma was smiling.

I take it coverage was pretty good, then?

I love Monarch and I especially love it on a POW day.  Great for you.

Yeah, and I hear they really overcharge you for parking!

I had a similar experience at Monarch last December.  A real hidden gem.  According to their snow report, Mirkwood is going to open Wed or Thurs of this week.

:worthless

In all seriousness, its cool that you joined EpicSki to share but its not cool to only post a link to your blog without posting some content on EpicSki.

I don't know how the coverage was before this storm since it has been a couple weeks since the last snow but it was pretty solid on this day.  There were a couple rocks and I mean  literally a couple that were hidden but I think once this snow consolidates there will be no issue with rocks on the lift served area.  Definately NOT enough hidden obstacles to bring your crud skis.   The rock I encountered were on the steeper slopes.  But I've been skiing New England the past several years and on a decent spring day or a tree run you see more rocks than I saw. A few tree tops were sticking out but were easily avoidable, think 2 or 3 foot spruce saplings just sticking through the surface.  I think Mirkwood may have thin coverage at spots if it does open this week because it has more exposure and probably more likely to get wind scoured.

Mirkwood almost always loads- not scours. Once Monarch hits about 3' for a base it is usually in pretty good shape, but as you said, early season has been wonky this year.

Do they still do Cat skiing there?  Probably not with 20 inches, but I am still wondering how much the Cat skiing costs?  I was talking to someone about Monarch the other day. Thx

They commonly run cats through April, even after the ski area closes.
