Skis that have not been used in several years -- or rentals?

I have a pair of slightly used skis that are several years old and have not been used for several years (since I moved to the tropics and had an inflexible schedule). I now have a chance to go skiing in Japan. Should I use these old skis (after bringing them to a shop in Japan) or rent? Bringing would be cheaper.

I am a skilled but not aggressive skier who will be skiing with novice and intermediates. I don't need anything fancy or performance. Just safe and serviceable. But I've never let skis sit for so long without being used.

I've taken skis all over the world, but when I skied in Japan I rented.  It's a much bigger deal to schlep skis to and then around Japan than to Europe!

Schleping skis around is a concern, especially since we will be traveling for a few weeks before hand but there are the excellent overnight baggage shipping services in Japan that I was planning to take advantage of.  I was hoping to get off the plane and send my skis directly to my hotel by the resort.

There's nothing except rust that should have happened to the skis, assuming that other stuff wasn't putting weight on them. It's not the lack of use, it's the storage.

But I question whether the sheer hassle is worth it. Plus, then you're hoping to match the skis you own to the conditions you find. Better to rent demo or performance skis (don't know what they'd call them there) for the terrain and snow the resort has.
