I had similar thoughts..depends if you are prepared to pay roaming data rates or buy SIMs every time you travel. I went WiFi only and I'm ok with that. For me personally, I don't want to pay for roaming or international data plans or do the SIM thing. I can live with WiFi. My work phone is paid for by the corp so anything critical work-related goes there anyway. Didn't make sense for me.
I have a personal aversion to Apple products but the cost is actually not bad. I'm considering as a xmas gift for a relative. I think they drank the Kool-Aid..
As for the Surface Pro, I actually considered this seriously as a replacement for my notebook/tablet. The problem is, the Win 8 touch apps are somewhat goofy/limited and the keyboard is not the greatest. But it does have real notebook power (i5) and runs your typical Win apps (we're a Win shop and I do dev in Win environment). For a work/play tablet, I'd go that way..it solves some compatibility issues for sure. The price tag is steep though although you're getting a good machine.
Having said all that, I have a Nexus 7 android tablet and it does the job for relatively little money for your typical travel/surf/email stuff. And there are enough fart apps to make it fun.
