yeah, sadly it looks that you'll have dry conditions but with some luck, it may snow Sat and Sun before you arrive which would improve things.
you're correct that Steamboat has snowguns but mostly on main trails. I would anticipate that given their history, they'll do a nice job grooming and really, off trail this early in the year would likely not be too great for lack of base.
They start opening up more trials when they can but I think this is normally starting the second weekend, this being 12th or 13th, if numbers (skiers) allow. It seems too SB may of changed some locations to open due to rebuilding the Four points. The Four Points and Storm Peak were open this last weekend so I'd speculate skiing up high is where you'd want to be.
In any case, hoping you a wonderful time. I suspect it's what you make of it for the mountain. I'd personally find any condition great being from the Midwest but know some of my friends would complain that if conditions are poor, they shouldn't of gone. But I find a trip relaxing, a get away and given more than half your time is off the hills, another whole aspect to a vacation not spoken towards. (The athletic club alone deserves a visit for the pools/spas)
I would guess having gone prior years early myself, that you'll find decent skiing up high, lower not great ... so stay high. (not in regards to recent law changes )
