Today (November 21, 2014) was Opening Day at Grand Targhee Resort. After a big storm last weekend, Targhee decided to open a week early. While the snow cover was just a little bit thin, it was definitely good skiing top to bottom.
Today was ALSO the six-month anniversary of my double knee replacement surgery. While everything has gone great with the surgery and the rehab, I was always just a little bit nervous about what might happen when I actually got off a lift and started skiing again with my "new" knees.
Well, I'm exceedingly happy to report that all seems to be well in the fake knees department. We skied about 20,000 vertical feet, roughly two-thirds of which were on groomers. The snow cover wasn't quite deep enough for me to be willing to just take off anywhere off-trail, but we did find a few spots that looked pretty smooth underneath. A friend got this little video of me on my faux knees:
It felt absolutely GREAT to be back on skis. A few little lingering aches in one knee while I was on the flats or skating, but no problems whatever while making turns. Even after an hour in the car coming home, no stiffness or soreness.
I'm really, really pleased.
Thanks for letting me share.
