Best Resorts In The East (Canada & USA)

Thread Starter

Being in Ontario there are not a lot of options when it comes to skiing so we usually take a trip to Quebec but have included some of the resorts in Vermont and Maine.

What resorts are your favourite for the following:

1) Steep with long fall lines

2) Glades

3) Nice cruisers

4) Family

Would probably help to know where have you been in VT and ME so far.  Which was your favorite?  What type of lodging and non-skiing stuff do you like?

First thought is Whiteface.  3200 ft vert and it's possible to ski top to bottom without stopping.  Lake Placid is a fun town.  But slope side lodging does not exist.

Sugarloaf Maine and Stowe Vermont tick off all of the criteria and are my two favorite east coast ski areas. Cannon Mt, Wildcat and Loon in New Hampshire can be great, so can Sugarbush and Killington in Vermont.

Several good suggestions in this thread already.

For my money, the best places that fit your criteria are all either in Northern VT, Sugarloaf or Whiteface.  The problem with the latter two is snowfall, or lack thereof.  Whiteface gets less than 200"/year and Sugarloaf comes in right at that figure.

In contrast, anyplace in VT from Sugarbush up to the QC border gets at least 275" and, in the case of Jay Peak, 350".  That makes a big difference if glade skiing is a priority, as the more snow you get, the longer and more reliable your glade skiing season is going to be.  Of the choices in VT, MRG has few groomers despite great fall lines, glades and a family atmosphere.  Jay Peak has the glades, family activities and some decent fall lines, but is not known for his cruisers.  Bolton also lacks the long fall lines, though checks the other boxes.

As such, best choices for your criteria are Stowe, Smuggs and Sugarbush.  Smuggs is known for its family programs but has a bad-ass and pretty uncrowded mountain to complement them.  Stowe is probably the best single mountain in the East, but tends to be much pricier than the rest.  I'm a huge fan of Sugarbush for its mix of big mtn skiing (in a VT context) and family friendliness.

Of course, YMMV based on personal preference.  If you want a real mountain town nearby, then Stowe and Whiteface become more attractive.  If you want a more rustic experience, then it's Sugarbush.

Stowe, Smuggs, Jay, and Sugarbush.
