This vid didn't turn out the way I had imagined it - haha
Course and medium fiber pads are always used to mellow or smooth. That's not really a flattening thing. It's more to smooth the cuts from the scraper. One is trying to smooth the peaks and valleys. The three grades are usually Red (Maroon) for Metal, Grey for Wood, and White for Glass.
Edit: Yes I always use them. Don't use the ones for doing dishes. They sometimes have "stuff" in them that you don't want.
the custom scrapers, you get these at a local sheet metal shop? These steel or stainless? nice simple solution. Wish I made some long ago when my previous employment had a machine shop with scraps of this size .. free for the taking
Yes, I went to a sheet metal place. They are stainless steel. Putting an edge on them is a hell of a chore. They will stay sharp (or not sharp) as you make them for some time.
But I do use the *grey* pads in a palm sander in combination with base cleaner when initially cleaning ski swap skis and I use *white* non abrasive ones chucked into a sheet sander (larger than palm) to polish hard waxes (very specifically including CH4, LF4, Toko Blue).
