Between sizes for new U10 racer

Thread Starter
Trying to decide on size for my new U10 racer girl. Not new skier been at it since age 3 she is 90lbs and 55". Was planning a single SL ski for this year looking at Nordica Slj but having a hard time settling on size. Have asked coach and he has provided little insight on size only says get a multi event or sl ski. I am between the 129 or 136 - 129 is about nose height and 136 around top of forehead. My inclination is go 129 as I think it will be easier for her to handle - this is her first real ski aside from the crappy junior skis. Thanks for any insight!!

Go with the 129. Parents, and I am guilty of this as well, have a tendency to want to 1) save money by buying slightly larger thinking they'll grow into or hedging that they will grow during the season, and 2) wanting their kids to look like bigger kids with bigger burlier equipment. From experience, there is nothing more frustrating to the child than being over-skied or over-booted. Get the equipment that will allow them to develop their skills rather than fight their equipment.

I agree with ZG's thinking in general but will throw out some food for thought/confusion-

1.  SL skis should generally be shorter indicating the 129 is right- it might be possible to add a longer GS ski next season.

2.  At 9 yo (I'm assuming), 129 seems like plenty of ski in an SL.

3.  At 90 lbs, she MIGHT be able to handle a longer ski depending on her skills.

4.  IF she can handle a longer ski, it MIGHT benefit her in GS.

5.  As a 1st year racer, listen to ZG and don't over ski her.

Here's an interesting video from the Canadian Ski Coaches Federation on selecting U10-U14 equipment. It is mostly boot focused but the general theme applies:

129 sounds just fine.

Keep her old skis for playing around in the park/forest/etc. Kids needs a pair of skis they can wreck without being yelled at.
