Family Ski Vacation Ideas [U.S. west, January]

My wife and I are looking at taking an extended ski trip with our 2 children.  We'd like to stay in the area for about a month and are having a hard time deciding where to stay.  We live on the East Coast and want to head out West.  Our children are 8 & 13.  8 year old likes to ski but has only gone a couple of times.  13 year old LOVES to ski and thinks he is better than he really is.  Ideas we've had so far are Jackson Hole, Tahoe and Utah (Alta/Snowbird) area.  We'd like to be in a place where we can easily get to the slopes (preferably short walk to lifts) and in a space with a few places to eat, etc nearby.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on the locations we've thought of so far and any new ideas you may have.  Prefer not to go to CO.

Thank you.

What is your budget and what dates are you talking about?  All the major places could work, such as Park City, some better than others for lower skill levels such as your children.  Smaller ski areas, such as Brian Head, are most affordable for staying short walk from slopes.

Welcome to EpicSki.

Looking at January.  We considered Park City, but they have the film festival there in January, so I figured that would make it a madhouse and probably drive the cost up.  Housing budget probably 5-6K.

January is a good month to try this due to low crowds and costs.  You said no Colorado, but first place after Park City that came to my mind was Steamboat due to close town, good low-intermediate terrain, moderate prices with deals for kids.  I don't know Telluride, but maybe that is a good one to investigate for your preferences.  Jackson could be nice, but you'd have to decide between slopeside vs. town. The mtn is more known for advanced/expert terrain.  Alta/Bird also known for advanced terrain, nice bases, but not a lot of town services.  Brian Head is obscure and smallish, no town, but could be one of the cheapest for slopeside families.  Whistler would be more expensive, but very entertaining for a month.  Some localities give lodgers a tax break if you stay for 30 days or more.  Maybe Northstar would be good in Tahoe, perhaps Heavenly too?

You should have started looking way sooner if this is for the coming season. Sounds like you would qualify for season passes if you're skiing for a month, but most of the cheap passes aren't being offered at this point. I'm sure there are exceptions, but here at least, that's $1000.

Thanks for the feedback. Heavenly is in the mix.  I like the idea of Tahoe b/c of the numerous mountains to choose.  A buddy of mine suggested Whistler, I may price it out.  I'm a little worried about sticker shock! I'll look into Steamboat.
