Top 5 Ski Resorts you Should Visit This Winter

Another Top (something) list......I know, yawn!

But this is pretty cool because it lists some amazing places and some reasons you really should put them on your list.

A snip and little reason that Taos made the list.

TAOS, NEW MEXICO

Why: For the 2014 – 2015 winter ski season Taos Ski Valley will be opening a new chairliftto Kachina Peak for the first time ever. The new lift will expand the ski area’s expert lift-serviced terrain by 50 percent. Topping out at 12,450 feet the new lift will be one of the highest chairlifts in North America.

At least they gave good reasons,  for Taos and Chrystal with new chair installations.

Revelstoke will never be the next Whistler and it's seldom that you can ski all the vert.

Nice place,  with one good 2000ft chair.  But quite possibly the most over hyped place ever.

Thats a Nice List (Taos, Revelstoke, Crystal, Big Sky, Jackson Hole)

#1- Revelstoke (I know its overhyped, but I have never been there)

#2- Kicking Horse ( I have been there one day, and I am going back)

#3- Crystal Mountain (Maybe not this year, but I am still want to go)

If the compilers of this list think that Revelstoke will some day become the next Whistler then they likely have never been to Revelstoke.

The builders and designers of RMR never accounted for the mountain's low elevation and thus built a flawed lift system. The Stoke Chair offers some very good 2000ft vert of skiing on the upper mountain but it is fed by a 2900' vert. Gondola with a base elevation (approx.2400ft ASL) that is too low when it gets mild. They should have reversed the vertical of the chair and the gondola so on a mild day when the bottom half of the mountain is way too wet, they could offer 3000ft vertical of good skiing on the upper mountain instead of just 2000ft.

RMR does not belong on this list. However, if you own a Mountain Collective Pass, then how about flying to Calgary, ski on the MCP at Sunshine Village and Lake Louise, then head to Whistler to ski on the MCP, about 11 or 12 hours away. On the way you would drive right by Kicking Horse and Revelstoke with a possible 1.5 hour detour to Silver Star or a 3/4 hour detour to Sun Peaks on the way to Whistler.

From what I've heard about Revelstoke, when there is fresh snow, the skiing is amazing (like most resorts). But there can be weeks of dry periods, and if you are stuck there when that happens, the skiing royally sucks. So it's pretty much hit or miss.

There can be weeks of no snow but no more than anywhere else and they do get more than adequate amounts of snow. RMR gets more snow than Kicking Horse or Sun Peaks and has way less dry spells than Lake Louise which has colder weather than RMR, half the snow fall of RMR, and weather patterns that do feature weeks of no new snow.

RMR does have some pretty sweet tree skiing when there are freshies in the woods.

Revelstoke has a number of flaws but lack of snow isn't one of them.
