Atomic Vantage Alibi 173 or 180.

Hi!

I know its about preferences but i want a second opinion on what length i should choose. I'm an experienced skier and i have had hard racing skies, done big jumps and rails on park/pipe skies and now when life moves on I want to get a nice pair of all mountain skies with bindings I can hike with. I have decided in Atomic Vantage Alibi and Atomic Tracker bindings but i cant decide what length. 173 feels short and 180 feels too long. I'm 5'9" (≈175cm) 163lb (≈74kg). What do u guys think?

Welcome. Suspect we'll think what you already think we'll think: Longer if you like stability and speed, shorter if you like maneuverability and moderate paces in tight places, or light weight.

That said, these have enough rocker that prolly better to err on the side of going long, unless you have a strong reason for wanting them quick. But you say you want all-mountain and the weight difference won't mean much for hiking, would if you skinned.

Well you're right but this will be my first rockerskies and I'm thinking that because it's rocker it should "behave" shorter, right?

The alibi would be great for hiking, as it is a light ski for an alpine ski. But since you are going for the tracker binding I am going to assume that you will be skinning as well, so you might want to consider the Atomic Drifter. The drifter has the same mid width, rocker, and side wall profile but is 25% lighter (1.5 versus 2 Kg) as the Ti backbone is replaced by a carbon backbone. there will be a performance difference on piste between the two too.

I think you should definitely go for the 180.

You are right about that.  @beyond has the core decision framework pretty well pegged here.

Based on your self-description I'd say go 180, especially in the Alibi which is a pretty light feeling ski to begin with.  If you are a pretty strong skier, if you're talking about pushing into the backcountry, you would likely find the 173 to feel really short and maybe too insubstantial for anything except tight spaces and quick fall line turns.

It depends a bit on your location, purpose and style - based on what you have said, I'd go with the 180 in this ski.  I wouldn't worry about it, but if you are super worried about length, and you like the idea of the Atomics, you could consider the Ritual at 174, which would probably deliver more stability as an all-mountain ride in the 173/174 length slot without a major weight penalty over the Alibi.

Thank you all for the help a pair in 180 is on the way. I had both the ritual and theory in mind but decided the Alibi is the one for me. Drifter is out of the question because the skies will most of the time be run on and around pistes with just a few hikes/year. (and I'm still way to immature to buy a ski without twin tip :))

Again thanks for the help,
