Mid March vacation Fernie, Panorama or Banff

Hi,

We are going on a March ski vacation flying into Calgary on March 14th for 10 days.

Initially we wanted to go to Fernie as we never skied there and heard it's beautiful, having skied Panorama a couple of times as well as many times in Banff (both Sunshine and Lake Louise).

We also have small kids and we were looking to enroll them into ski school and we think Fernie and Pano might be better value from this perspective.

However I have recently come across many posts suggesting the skiing conditions may be very tricky during this period (mid to end of March) in Fernie. I am now thinking of switching to Panorama as it it further north comparing to Fernie and it has a higher elevation as well. I tried to find some more info on Panorama for March skiing and I couldn't find posts complaining about mild weather or rain during this period at Panorama.

I know Banff is even further north and even higher elevation but we've skied Banff so many times and I think the ski schools are more expensive there (and maybe more commercial).

For these reasons we were thinking of one of these 2 options:

3 days in Fernie followed by 7 days in Panorama

7 days to Panorama followed by 3 days in Banff

All these depends on how good the skiing conditions could be in Panorama in March comparing to Fernie and Banff.

I appreciate your views on this.

Thank you

I would have to agree March 10 to 24 can be a tiny bit risky for Fernie. Usually that's a great time for Fernie as they tend to get some pretty decent snowfall in March but occasionally that can mean rain. La Nina throws in an unknown variable. Panorama is a safer bet and also, with the exception of Taynton, Panorama is much more of a family friendly intermediate long cruiser mountain than Fernie.

How about booking 7 days at Panorama for the first part of your holiday then decide Banff or Fernie? Would a last minute decision would be OK? That way if the conditions are good you could go to Fernie but also have a plan B. You could PM me for an unbiased report while you are at Panorama.

BTW If you end up in Fernie you should  check out Castle as you could ski it for a day on the way back to Calgary. It would probably be a different experience.  Also, being higher and colder than Fernie and snowier than Panorama, March is one of the best times for powder at Castle especially midweek.

Let me know if I can help
