13 yr old ski recommendation

My son is 13 5'2" 118 lbs. I have a pair go Gotama Jr's in 158 that his brother skied on a couple of years ago. They don't have more than 25 days on them, so plenty good. We ski at Squaw valley. He skis 80% groom 20% off piste. I expect soon, with the right equipment, that might flop. He's an intermediate skier. Would these be good skis or would he benefit from something a little different? I don't mind buying him his own skis, but he doesn't care much. I just want him to enjoy himself. I will buy used because, if he's like his brother, he'll grow several inches this next year or two.

Gotama jr is not my favorite, but they should be fine. Just make sure it's not the recent full rockered version, they are not good skis fir learning. I've no idea about the size.

I've decided to get him skis that are for him rather than hand me downs. What are some good skis for west coast skier, intermediate, boy, 5'2" 118 lbs who skis mostly groom but adventures off 20%?

At his height and weight you are on the cusp of the longest kids skis.  His height (157cm) says adult skis, his weight (118#) and "intermediate" level says a kids' 149 (which would probably hit just around the upper lip (nose).

For a 13 year old boy, at the size you describe, at Squaw Valley, I'd probably go with the Shreditor 85 Jr (or an old K2 bad seed - same ski).  You'll get one season max because of the length, but he won't be "intermediate" or his current size much longer - so this is probably only a one season investment (which I know is a bit of a bummer to hear).  Get it 149, it isn't hugely expensive, and flip it next year when he is more experienced, bigger and moves into adult sizes.

Based on the super in-depth reviews of my 12 year old :), that ski (the Bad Seeds) holds a solid edge, turns easily (kid-speak for "carves intuitively" I think) and floats OK enough in soft snow for a light weight.  His other comparable are the Got Jr. and the Chetler Jr. - he likes those for different things, but the most versatile (based on which ski he chooses when) seems to be the K2.

Let him try the gotama and see how it works before buying anything else.

That's good news because that's One of the skis he wants. Based on nothing other than graphics not that I would allow that
