So with the snow impending tonight, I'm trying to decide where to go either tonight or early tomorrow am for a powder day skiing tomorrow. I usually go to whitetail for day trips (coming from NOVA) but I can head anywhere tonight or tomorrow. Snowshoe has the most snow in the forecast and I have a pass there, but I'd have to drive out this afternoon and it looks like the drive will be taxing with heavy snow falling that way all afternoon.
I could also drive down to either Wintergreen (6-10" tonight) or Massanutten. But I've never been to either, can anyone offer some advice? I'd prefer to ski trees, etc on a powder day but I realize thats probably only going to happen at Snowshoe. Anyone driven out there during a storm? I imagine its not fun but if the roads are kept ok I can manage it.
Coming from DC I believe the drive to Massanutten involves little actual mountain driving (caveat: I have never actually done this drive). Wintergreen would probably be the tougher drive of the 2, since the final approach does involve several twists and turns as you gain ~1000 vertical feet. I will be trying for a couple hours there tomorrow morning, on the theory that the roads will be cleared tomorrow morning (I will be starting from Charlottesville, about an hour away). Hoping for some powder turns in the one small glade that Wintergreen has.
