Here we go again--ski length for SG U14

I have a first year U14 (12 years, 150 cm/4'11", 40 kg/88 lb) girl. Getting her a pair of SG-skis for 14/15 season and want to hear opinions on lengths. Was looking at 175ish/r27m, but then realise that a lot of kids go with the next size up, 180+. She has been on 152 cm Elan RCG for GS, used them for a speed-camp last season too--shakey--perhaps a little short even in GS. Will get 165 for GS this season. Coach tend to recommend longer. What's the accumulated wisdom here on Epic?

I got a pair of 175s for my first year u14 and she's 13 lbs heavier than yours.    I can't wait to ski them myself just for the fun of it:D

I think 175 should be fine at her weight/height. 25cm over head height is still a pretty long ski.

That fact that some competitors have longer skis is not very useful data. At this age weight/skill/strength can be very different.

What's your kid/s on? To go 175 was my gut feeling, but then heard what the coach said and I would go against his advice--need some reassurance. I guess the sign-o-the times is longer.

My son was first year U14 last year and was on 185. But he was about 52kg. The year before he was on 175.

You say this is her first year. Has coach seen her ski?

Ghost--it's her first year in U14. Coach have had her for three seasons.
Hyperkub--was there a lot of kids on shorter lengths in your sons group? How did they handle the greater speeds in U14? I understand that courses will be faster this year compared to the U12 SG.

cheers

Unless there is something obviously wrong with her coach, who has coached her for three seasons, I wouldn't try and second guess his recommendations. Don't forget, it is a Junior SG ski.

Absolutely nothing wrong! Coach is great, but tend to recommend very long skis inmo. Just wanted to hear what others with U14 experience had to say.

I am with Ghost... should listen to the coach's recommendation. In addition to heights & weights, ability also plays an important part in how long skis she should/can handle. My daughter was 5'0 last year. Coach recommended 150cm SL from 140cm year before. I thought that was a bit much and went with 145cm... in retrospect, I should have listened.

On a separate note, I am a little surprised about SG for U12? Up in frozen north, we don't even have SG race in provincial / regional race series for U14 - they trained and have a few runs but SG race is not part of the series.

Frozen North... We're in Sweden. :) Over here kids have a couple of regional SG races already in U12. So the challenge varies due to the terrain available, but obviously gentle SG:s. Most (all?) can be handled with GS skis. National races not until U14. We didn't do any SG races last season, but went to speed camp on GS skis. Most kids had GS, which was kind of ok for the U12 speed camp, but it will not work for this years SG-courses. I'm trying to find a used 180-185 ski instead (or a bargain deal on a few years old model).

Forgot to mention in my original post, my daughter was using 170cm GS and 183cm SG last year. She's 154cm now and will be on 175cm GS and 189cm SG
