Crazy lift video

I saw a video today dated 1980 and it appeared they were testing a lift with cement blocks in the seats. Whatever slows the chairs down was not working and the chairs were whipping around, throwing the blocks and destroying this lift. I am curious where this was and what happened and if it was repaired. Thanks

It was at Winter Park. The lift was scheduled to be demolished, so they were performing tests on it, to see what would happen in various unlikely situations. For what happened in the test you're talking about, every single safety feature would have to fail all at once, so it's pretty much impossible. They did fix it after that test so they could continue with more tests. The scariest one is the one where they burned the lift shack, causing the cable to snap and derail in only 14 minutes. No way could they evac everyone on a lift that quickly, if a lift shack were to ever burn so catastrophically.

Thanks for posting! That was really interesting! Was this called the Eskimo lift? Anyone know where the lift was at wp?

Yes, it was the Eskimo lift. It was replaced by another fixed grip lift, which was removed in 99 and replaced by the Eskimo HSQ, which is still there today. When the service brake fails, the lift attendant would activate the bullwheel break.  While a roll back like that is unlikely, it's not impossible.

It happened at Devil's Head a few years ago

We've had a few discussions about this video.
