That's not how it works.
Wana Get Away fares are typically cheapest 6 months out. Usually 1/3 of an Anytime fare or 1/4 of Business Select. As seats get scarce, fares start going up.
3 weeks out, they go up regardless of availability and 1 week out, Wana Get Away's go away completely.
If you change your ticket to depart at the last minute, you pay the current Anytime or Business Select fare.
You can use your travel credit up to one year from the original booking date and if you co-mingle travel credit, it all reverts to the oldest booking date.
I book three or four weekends in a row, a month or so in advance, then choose the ones that look the most promising as they get closer.. Then take the unused credit and book the next trip a couple of more months out.
If you have miles on SWA, that's the best way to book, because points never expire.
