Need a new helmet

Thread Starter

Hi Racers.  I need a new race style brain bucket.  GS only.  Don't need a bar.

Drawn to POC and Giro.  Full ear coverage race models please.  Anyone have any thoughts?

Go fast.  Take chances.

Pat, i am a big fan of POC for but that is because they fit my head well and are (IMHO) a quality product. I have the Skull comp2  and the new multi impact race one they introduced last year.  I tried their slalom helmet and didn't like it so I use the skull comp with a bar instead.

They are a rather different fit to Giro in my experience.  Shred/Uvex are also a bit different in fit.  Find the brand that fits best and get their top of the line race version!

Yep, I know the Poc's are real. As you know Marty coachs with McCartney and he is POC all the way!

Any recommendations for someone coming from old Jofa 2400s?

Tried so far, all in sizes supposedly meant for 61cm circumference:

POC - not enough forehead room, roomy everywhere else

Boeri - not enough volume, though *some* XXL models fit OK-ish

Shred - not enough volume, helmet sits an inch too high.

Briko - too much lateral volume, too short in back, by at least 2 inches.

Carrera - way, way too small

Giro - old Giros fit loosely,  the new ones feel Briko-like.

I have found the sizes all over the place.  I am an M in POC but in Uvex/Shred (they seem to use the same mold) I need to go to a large.  In Briko I need to go to a small.  I have also found 2 basic shapes in helmet - what i call the POC/Briko fit and the Uvex/Shred fit.  It sounds like you are in the latter.  Try the Shred in a larger size

see, that's the trouble, the Shred XL sits an inch too high.    I have no idea what sort of headforms these people are using; I was only medium/large in a Jofa.

I have an old moto-styled Boeri that fits - labeled XXL   ??????

do I need a neck brace with that, @beyond ? :cool

Seriously, even if I can get this leg to heal in time for skiing, it's going to be a no-helmet season for me.

How about any of Sweet protection Rooster models. But I guess that they might be difficult to find in US.

A side note. I have started to like webshops with generous return policy. I have just ordered a Poc backcountry mips and a Sweet protection grimnir mips. It was no issue to return the one that does not fit ( or in worst case both)

You're absolutely right - there are 7 ski shops local to me, not counting box stores like REI - of those, only one stocks race helmets at all.

Sounds like you have a head shape similar to me - big diameter/volume in total, but not so wide ear-ear. I have found the Head Stivot in XL to be a good fit. I liked it so much I bought a second one, so that I have one with a guard for slalom and one without for GS/speed.

My POC Skull Comp saved my ass... in the back country. I highly recommend them.

I really like my poc comp 2 - you can't hear well in it though, insulates well. But feels very safe - I really like the honeycomb at the top.

I did have to shave the foam a bit on the one side, not much, like 1mm. Got a good deal from reliable i think.
