It's a good gauge for the most snow you'll find on the mountain that day, but far from the average. Hence, why I heard a buddy of mine (who skis every single day, btw) in JH this past season complain about the over-reporting. No offense, but I'll take their word over someone that works for the mountain and has to uphold a certain level of loyalty toward the resort. I also know that marketing has nothing to do with where the stakes are located, but they have EVERYTHING to do with what stake they choose to use as the official report. The fact that JH uses their "summit" snow stake as the official report is misleading, plain and simple. My $0.02.
I find it hard to believe that the Ramer plot is over 10,000'. You could be right. It is not near the summit though. It is not even on the same peak as The Tram. It's located above the top of The Gondola between the Headwall and Casper Bowl. IMO it is the most representative single point that I can think of for reporting snow for the entire resort. As far as my being a shill for my employer goes... I really have no need to toe the company line or be a cheerleader for them. I used to really hate the ski corp in the 90s. I think they are much better now. Not perfect, but pretty good. While I see no need to publicly complain about whatever grievances I might have with JHMR, I also don't see the need to praise them if I don't think they deserve it. I am particularly proud to be part of the JHMR Mountain Sports School. So shoot me for that. We are not perfect, but there is a lot of good stuff happening here.
I don't know who your friend is or how long (he?) has been here and I don't care. I have observed that some people feel an entitlement regarding this mountain and like to bitch about nearly everything. I got over that years ago with regards to JHMR. BTW where do CO resorts place their snow-stakes? Some of them have base elevations nearly as high as our summit. Are you really saying that they record from the base or at an elevation significantly lower than 10,000'?
