Any time- and destination-specific hot tips on plane tickets from the MA / NH / ME area?
I'm having a hard time finding affordable yet manageable flights, despite two months of near-daily looking and a raft of alert subscriptions. My definition of "affordable yet manageable" is a round-trip air ticket that costs less than $500 and which facilitates an overall itinerary with no more than three transport legs, including major ground segments, between right-coast Portland and Jackson Hole. (The three leg limit is kind of arbitrary, but I have found that four legs tend to lead to 18-hour travel days and increasing risk of lost luggage, missed connections, and other logistics snafus. Two leg options sometimes exist but are generally way too expensive even when available.)
- PWM -> BWI(air) -> SLC(air) -> JAC(ground) == okay (three travel legs)
- PWM -> BOS(ground) -> SLC(air) -> JAC(ground) == okay (three travel legs)
- PWM -> ATL(air) -> DEN(air) -> JAC(air) == okay (three travel legs)
- PWM -> BOS(ground) -> BWI(air) -> SLC(air) -> JAC(ground) == NOT okay (four travel legs)
Southwest had a good deal back on August 5, which I let pass because I was waiting for clearance from other parties. Huge mistake, as the fare went from about $350 to about $900 within a day or two and has stayed there stubbornly ever since. (I suspect that college spring break may be playing a nefarious role here.)
I have a couple days' flexibility on dates, on either end. I am not a frequent flyer so I don't have any meaningful "points" to use.
