Airfare Hot Tips? - Northeast Edition [to 2015 JH Gathering]

Any time- and destination-specific hot tips on plane tickets from the MA / NH / ME area?

I'm having a hard time finding affordable yet manageable flights, despite two months of near-daily looking and a raft of alert subscriptions. My definition of "affordable yet manageable" is a round-trip air ticket that costs less than $500 and which facilitates an overall itinerary with no more than three transport legs, including major ground segments, between right-coast Portland and Jackson Hole. (The three leg limit is kind of arbitrary, but I have found that four legs tend to lead to 18-hour travel days and increasing risk of lost luggage, missed connections, and other logistics snafus. Two leg options sometimes exist but are generally way too expensive even when available.)

Examples:

  • PWM -> BWI(air) -> SLC(air) -> JAC(ground) == okay (three travel legs)
  • PWM -> BOS(ground) -> SLC(air) -> JAC(ground) == okay (three travel legs)
  • PWM -> ATL(air) -> DEN(air) -> JAC(air) == okay (three travel legs)
  • PWM -> BOS(ground) -> BWI(air) -> SLC(air) -> JAC(ground) == NOT okay (four travel legs)

Southwest had a good deal back on August 5, which I let pass because I was waiting for clearance from other parties. Huge mistake, as the fare went from about $350 to about $900 within a day or two and has stayed there stubbornly ever since. (I suspect that college spring break may be playing a nefarious role here.)

I have a couple days' flexibility on dates, on either end. I am not a frequent flyer so I don't have any meaningful "points" to use.

Any chance you can connect with somebody you know headed to Jackson from the Denver area and fly in there and carpool up.  Assuming there are cheaper flights into Denver which is probable.

Or maybe some others may fly into SLC.....group carpool ?

Flights from here in central KYto Jackson  ran close to $800.

Thanks UL. Yeah, Denver flights are definitely cheaper, and have the benefit of being practicable on Southwest. But that does add two travel days to the round trip due to the long drive. My assumed plan was to fly to Salt Lake but at the moment fares there are so high from here that flights to Jackson are actually a better deal at only a hundred bucks or so extra. Still pondering, and still planning to make something work.

Fly out on Tuesday/Wednesday and back on Tuesday/Wednesday. Boston is going to be cheaper than Portland (I think you know this).

I see a Boston<->JAC through DFW both ways 2/25 to 3/4 for $596.

Yup, that's exactly the one I've been eyeing, on slightly different dates with a slightly different price. But $600 is still not the $350  I'd been budgeting.  :(

Good luck with it.  Is there any reason you think it'll get less expensive if you wait?

Well, the "common wisdom" used to be tickets were cheapest 2 months before the flight.  Of course, it is like search-engine-optimization: once the public knows the rules, they change them, precisely because we know them.

A quick google finds cheapair.com says, on average, 7 weeks ahead is best, with lots of caveats.  For example, further ahead is better for holidays, and some markets are completely different. A nice summary from them:

I had to buy a ticket for an unexpected work trip the day before once -- talk about sticker shock!
