2013 Volkl Katana's - 184cm or 191cm?

Hi All,

I'm looking for some advice on skis.  I just purchased a pair of 2013 Volkl Katana 191 cm skis over the weekend and am afraid they're a bit too long for me.  I'm considering returning them for the same ski in 184 cm but figured I'd come here for some advice before doing so.

A little bit of background info on me.  I'm 32 years old, 6'5", 250 lbs.  I'm an advanced skier that usually skis the entire mountain all day.  I grew up on the east coast skiing Upstate NY and Vermont and just moved to Denver, CO this summer.  I purchased the Rocky Mountain Super Pass and am planning on spending all of my free time this winter at Copper Mountain, Winter Park, Breckenridge, and Keystone.

I've been skiing a 184 cm Volkl AC30 for the last 5  years and am very comfortable with it on and off piste, on groomers, and in the trees.  I figured now that I live out west I might as well fill my quiver with an All Mountain Powder ski for fresh POW days but after reading more and more about the 191 cm Volkl Katana it might be too advanced and demanding for my skill level.

Anyways, any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Given your size and the fact that the ski is full rockered I don't think the length is too much for you. Rather than looking at the actual length, look at the relative length--where in the range of lengths for that model the ski is.  Katanas go up to 198, which tells you that they ski relatively short. That said I haven't personally skied them so if anyone who knows more about the ski than I do posts--ignore my advice.

I would be more inclined to return them for the 198's at your size.

Just for a comparison I am 6'1" weigh in at 220 and just received my new Icelantic "Gypsy" 190

it is also a reverse camber 151-125-148,

Go for the larger ski you will be happy you did.

Go with the 191's. They were my everyday ski until the Katana V-Werks came along (I also have them in a 191). And I still have a pair of 191 Katana's in my quiver. I'm 5'9, 192 lbs. and the 191's work great.

Realize that the 191 has a lot more fiberglass and epoxy than the 184, and the 198 has even more than the 191. The 198 is for true superhumans only, IMHO.

Thanks for all the input guys.  I really appreciate it.  I think i'll just stick with my initial instinct and keep the 191's :)

It would be interesting if you report back after you get used to them.

If that doesn't qualify as superhuman...

If i was as big as the OP is, i would size up to 198

I also think the 198's would suit. I haven't skied Katanas but had one of my best ever days of skiing on 195 Kuros. I'm only 6"3 and 220.
However, anything over 190 and I would gave to buy another ski bag as well. I ended up purchasing 190 Boomerangs.

Just keep in mind the 198's are much stiffer then the 191's.

Lol I'm definitely not super human by any means.  Thanks for the compliment though. :)  Considering the 191's are stiffer than the 184's and the 198's are even stiffer than that, I think i'll just meet in the middle and keep the 191's.  I'll post back after I get them on some snow.  Old man winter couldn't come soon enough. :)

Ted Ligety is 5'11" 190lbs

Alberto Tomba is 6' 203lbs

6'5" 250lbs is about the average size of an NFL Tight End or an NBA power forward (maybe add a couple inches to height).    Pretty much super humans in my book.

I think all would opt for 198's.  :)

Looking forward to the report.

191 seems appropriate for the Katana, they ski true to length as a 191. The 198's will be quite a bit stiffer and will suck anywhere other then open terrain, at least the 191 will be manageable.
