Have had my box for 10 years now. I couldn't imagine going back to roof rack or inside carry. Just make sure to get an appropriate size. Smaller is cheaper, and my Thule Frontier suits my purposes, except when friends want to road-trip somewhere. Length is never a problem, and I can still fit two pair of skis, and two snowboards, or 4 pair of skis, but more than two snowboards kind of exceeds the height capacity, and the frontier is too narrow to spread them out.
Of course it's bad enough if I have to ride with two snowboarders, let alone three, and I have yet to exceed my boxes capacity. I have had to limit myself to one ski choice on a given day , and in hind-sight prolly should have just made one of the snowboarders hitch.
I'm also lazy, and like the idea of leaving my skis in the box for days at a time between ski days. I wouldn't be so lazy if my boards were exposed to the elements, or clearly visible, and dripping/rusting, and generally cluttering the inside of my car. I have found a little surface rust on the edges if it's been warm, but usually don't take more than 4 days off at a time, so the rust tends to be pretty minimal.
Also, I've placed an old foam sleeping bag mat on the bottom of my box that reduces some of the rattle. Closed-cell foam resists tearing, and doesn't absorb moisture as much.
