Steamboat v. Breck - 1st Wk December

My wife and I usually visit Breck once a year in February. I am not a very good skiier, some cruiser blues usually, and my wife is now pregnant, so the only trip we are going to be able to to accomodate this year is the first weekend of December. Originally it was thanksgiving, but was able to get it moved back a week.

That being said, for you all who are much more familiar with the areas, considering the following:

- I am the only one skiing and am a level 5 at best so don't need difficult content open

- need other things to do (i.e. sleigh rides, close dining like main st. in breck, spa availability)

Which would you choose between Breck and Steamboat Springs? Have never been to Steamboat and didn't know if it was worth giving it a shot, or should stick with Breck, which we always love visiting.

Thanks!
Chris

I'd agree. Variety is the spice of life (sayz the guy who has never skied Breckenridge). If you go to Steamboat you might consider staying in town (about three miles from the slopes). You can ride the shuttle bus back and forth to slopes, while wife can easily stroll around town, which has a little more homey/western feel than the touristy/transitory feel of a condo village near the base of the mountain.

Ok, so steamboat it will be then.

We usually stat at One Ski Hill in Breck which is a 4star ski in/out property that is top notch. Can someone help with an equivalent property in Steamboat? My wife is going to want the best since she can't ski while there.

Welcome to Epicski!  How many days are you going to stay?  I have no idea if it makes any difference with a pregnancy, but Steamboat is at lower altitude than Breck.  The hot springs around Steamboat are fun.

Yes, I noticed Steamboat is at a lower altitude, which will likely lower the sickness if any that she would have, but the OB already gave her the thumbs up for the short trip. So that is a real plus definitely, as I always get a little woozy that first day.

Three Nights - Checking in 12/7, leaving 12/10.

Have heard that the Sheraton at Steamboat is very easy access to the slopes.  It's a favorite of a woman who was doing an annual solo trip to Steamboat for a few years.

For such a short trip, definitely an advantage to be sleeping at lower altitude.  Check out the EpicSki Article about high altitude.

The Sheraton is ok, but it is no One Ski Hill.

Great choice, although no one can predict the weather, around that time (1st week) there is limited runs open but it will all depend. Otherwise, there's a ton of other stuff to do here.  If you are looking for a 4-star type of accommodation, "One Steamboat" is probably your kind of place. Its right at the base and has a private shuttle too. Not sure if you are in the market for a townhouse or condo though.

You can call the resort or "retreatia" who is my property management company and speak with them about some higher quality properties.

Altitude: the base is just below 7K, downtown is about 6750-ish.  Most find this to be acceptable. Remember to drink water , avoid alcohol and too much coffee; anything that will dehydrate you.

Feel free to PM me with any questions.

No rant on this one, since the OP has explained the time constraint with a pregnant wife.  So you have to pick based upon early season snow history and hope for the best.  Steamboat is the clear cut choice by that criterion, certainly among top 10 in North America.  Steamboat averages 69% open mid-December vs. 42% for Breckenridge.

what they open is not really dictated by the weather; its more due to the number of visitors. Many years there are really good sections of the mountain that are ready to roll but they won't drop the ropes regardless.  Sunshine is the most popular area that doesn't typically get opened until the week before or the week of Christmas.
