Supershape Rally 170 vs 177

Hi,

i have a two ski quiver with a Völkl Mantra 184cm and the classic Head Supershape 170cm (~2008). I have been a Ski Instructor for many years but i am not actively teaching since about 2 years.

So i guess my skills are not to bad, i am 178cm ~78kg and looking for a replacement for my old Supershape, i am going to ski it whenever there is not enough powder to get out the big ones.

I already chose the Supershape Rally but i am not sure whether to get it in 170 or 177 - i guess the 170 would be a bit more agile on groomers while the 177 should be better at high speeds and maybe has an advantage in off-pist?

What would you choose, or maybe anyone did ski both?

Thanks

My classic Head Supershapes will be retired for this season, RIP! If you like making short turns, then the 170 Rally will be a much better match. Still, it does not turn like the sub 70 waist Supershape, and, the Head Speed or Magnum would be much closer to your old ski. My experience on longer skis, around 80 waists, is that higher velocity and/or crud skiing is the benefit, but, the trade-off results in a cumbersome ski when short turns are needed.

But, then again, I like short turns, so, others may disagree.

Owned the old Supershapes in 165 (I'm 6', 165), not an instructor, demoed the Rally's one run, so inconclusive; but the head coach of our club's racing program - and several other coaches or instructors - were on the Rally's all this past season as daily drivers outside the courses. My sense from my one run, and from talking to him, is that like all iHeads, it stays damp stable at decent speed, but is better at an instructional pace than some other models of Heads. He's about 5'10, I'd guess 175, can't recall if he was on the 170 or 177. I've seen guys a bit bigger than him on the 177. Although my hunch is that at that length it's less slalomy, more SL/GS hybrid-ish than the 170 Supershape. I'd agree with Living Proof that if you want to replicate the feel of the Supershape, maybe the Magnum in a 170 so the radius stays low. But the Rally seems to be everybody's fav for all frontside duties from crud and bumps to ice. You can PM Phil, who's skied all of these, if you want to pin things down.

Here is my long term test on the 2014 Supershape Rally. I skied the Rally a good amount of time last season in the 177. For it's size, I found it to be incredibly nimble and if I could sum up the Rally in one sentence it would be that the Rally was capable of making a multitude of turn shapes at a multitude of speeds. You and I are about the same height but you have a few more Kg on me. I think you will be happy with the 177 for as you said the added off piste versatility…but you do have your Mantras for that...and stability at speed but the 170 while being a bit quicker could be the choice as a complement for the Volkl. What length were your old SS's?

Thanks for your posts. As said my old Supershape is 170cm, i am aware that the Rally is not a 1:1 replacemant but a more versatile ski. Most of the time i choose my ski in the morning and most of the time there wont be enough powder to take the Mantra - but that is not stopping me from getting off-pist wherever it looks nice, so i think i will like the wider shape of the Rally. I also thought about the Titan but then again, for real freeride turns i have the Mantra and the Rally should suit me better on groomers.

So now i am down to the choice Rally in 170 or 177...

170..Quicker and more nimble

177..Faster and more stable

You decide what YOU want. You have all the information, it comes down to how you want the ski to react.

Hey, can I resurrect this thread to ask a question about the Rally.  My shop doesn't demo them (just the Titan) so I have to go by reports.

I had the original Supershapes in 170cm from several years ago and loved them as a front-side ski on my local mountain (mostly blue cruiser ) but found I could still trees and bumps with them.

I've been on a quest for the perfect all mountain ski but haven't found anything I've fallen in love with after demoing about a dozen skis.  I bought the Head Rev 80 Pro in 177cm a couple years ago in hopes of getting something a bit more all-mountain than the Supershapes but never really liked them.  I think they just ski too big for me and I should have bought the 170.  So now I'm thinking I should get front-side ski and then in a year or two get something wider and bigger for powder and crud.

I like that the original Supershape was turny and carved great but that you could lay off it and cruise as well.  I liked it's grip.  I never liked the grip on the Rev80Pro.  Either it comes from the factory with too much bevel or there is something else about it I just don't like with respect to the edges.  I'm also not crazy about the early rise.  I've demoed tip/tail rocker skis I don't mind but there's something about tip rise that just feels weird to me.  The Rev80Pro in 177cm has been too much ski for me in a lot of condition.  I know another skier who bought it in 170cm who's my size and says that would have been the right length.  The only time I do like them is doing cruising GS turns in softer gloppy snow.

So if I liked the original Supershape in the 170 would the Rally be the best choice in the new models?  And in 170cm?  How would they compare to each other?

And should I consider the others?  I don't know if I'll get a chance to get back to my home mountain to demo the Magnums.

Me:

PSIA Alpine LII

55yo

6'

185lbs.

Not is strong fit as when I was younger but still reasonably active.

Ski 30-40 days a year.

Current ski: Nordica HotRod Modified 170cm 74mm waist R around 15-16m  These things are getting old but I really like them.  They aren't quite enough ski when I get going fast but are pretty darn versatile and good for pretty "ski instructor" stuff.  I'd like something that's about 10-15% more ski than this but don't want to be overskied.
