Laax Vs. Obergurgl

Thread Starter

Hello,

I have the opportunity to go with my children ages (12 and 10 - snowboarders) to either Laax or Obergurgl this coming Dec. 2014.  My wife and I ski.  I have never been to either place and wonder if anyone has gone to both and which one would you recommend. The hotels where we can stay are:  The Cyrstal in Obergurgl and Signina Hotel in Laax.  Thanks.

Been to both but quite some time ago. Not much between them then except that Obergurgl has more of a traditional chocolate box mountain village feel to it and things are more concentrated. Laax is really three different ski sations linked by a common lift system.

What time of year are you going? The difference in base altitude could be the deciding factor depending on when you plan on going.

The OP says December.

Both resorts are pretty snowsure but there is more chance of snow in the resort in Obergurgl.

Flims-Laax is predominantly south facing.  It's mostly intermediate though.  Off the groomed is rarely any good except at the highest elevations with that exposure.  There were extensive melt/freezes when I was there in late January 2013, so that means it can happen in December.

The exposure could be a plus for better visibility in the low sun months, but if it actually snows you're not going to see well anywhere in Alps above tree line.

Temporary blindness on my part. :(

I agree with Obergurgl for December. Laax would be better mid-season.
