Taos?

Hey All..following the El Nino thinking for this winter..we're kicking around the idea of a Telluride/Taos trip this upcoming winter.  We're kinda planning a drive-out into the desert as part of the trip and am curious if there is a consensus on whether Taos will have a good year and where the best lodging may be.  Any thoughts?  Thanks so much!

Whether Taos has a good year spends on the weather. If you've read the El Niño thread you know what anyone knows.

For lodging, I'd say that El Monte Sagrado would be the best...for certain values of "best." You might or might not be interested after finding out that the rates start somewhere around $170/night and that it's about a half hour from the ski area, but we'd need a lot more information about what your parameters for "best" are.

No one knows.  Even if a strong El Nino forms (doesn't look like it at this point), it's still just an exercise in probability, it doesn't guarantee anything.

If you want to go no matter what the conditions are like, book, go, and have fun.  If you only want to go if conditions are good, wait and book last minute.  If you don't have that luxury (due to whatever else goes on in your non-skiing life), either roll the dice or don't, but no one can tell you for sure.

We go to Taos every year at the end of February and early March - this seems to be the most sure time and we've never been disappointed. Going again in 2015.

Coming from the Toronto area I think you would really enjoy the strong contrast in a place like Taos if you have the right attitude that your trip is about great terrain and fun, quirky infrastructure and après ski. It can be so, for lack of a better word, SUNNY in NM. The cultural influence is pretty unique, so is the advanced terrain. I had good luck and enjoyed fine conditions there in early Jan 2012 [http://www.epicski.com/a/taos-grades-high-in-geography ], but if you advance book at a fairly snow-sure time as suggested by green26 you should be fine. I love Whiteface, but subpar conditions at Taos are probably going to be equal or better than par conditions at places closer to your home such as Whiteface. Never been to Telluride, but combining a visit there with Taos sounds sensational, two off-the-beaten-track places with renowned steeps.

Thanks for the information.  We're not booking early this time around so I suppose we'll wait and see.  Seems like it's worth the drive down and if the snow shows up we'll probably give it a go.  We've been to Telluride and loved the feel of the place.  I hate to admit we're spoiled on the ski and stay now..but we do appreciate authenticity as well.  :-)

Wait and see is always the soundest advice.  If you're thinking of committing early, don't go any earlier than February.   Green26's experience is not an accident.
