I'm trying to find next year's ski for my older daughter and I'm coming up empty. I could really use the collective community wisdom.
First off, my daughter is quite short for her age. She's almost 11 and only 4'2" tall. Not only that, she's thin for her height, at 50 lbs. She's built like a ballet dancer, which she is. Our family doesn't grow quickly.
Next year will be her second on Squaw's Big Mountain Team. Last year, she placed in the top ten in one of their competitions. She doesn't suck. She's been skiing since age 3 and on some sort of team since 7.
I'm thinking she needs a ski at least 80mm wide, but not too much wider. Probably 145cm long or so. I'm thinking tip rocker, camber underfoot, traditional tail. I think I'm describing an all-mountain ski with a strong off-piste bias and enough float for some maritime powder. Given her weight, it'll have to be a soft ski. Ideally, it will have girly graphics.
I'm trying to avoid park skis, stiff-as-a-board skis, and (to a lesser extent) twin tips. The ski she used last year was the 2013 Line Snow Angel 143cm. The width was right, the flex was good. The mount point, however, seemed rather forward. This might have been because it was a twin. There was a lot of ski behind her heels. This ended up being a deal breaker because she couldn't easily carry her skis over her shoulder for hiking. The Big Mountain Team does lots of hiking. The skis would cantilever her backward to the point it felt unsafe. Next year's skis really need a more traditional mount point.
I've considered the following skis so far:
Head Ethan Too - new graphics suck, not many for sale
Moment Carson - too stiff
Volkl Gotama Jr. - not girly, likely too stiff
Atomic Bent Chetler Mini - too boy, too wide?
Atomic Century - ???
Elan Petite - ???
K2 Shreditor 85 - too boy?
K2 Bad Seed - very boy
Blizzard Cochise Jr. - too wide? not girly
I'd appreciate any advice, especially comments on the skis above and suggestions of other skis. Thanks.
