Unsung heroes of the Tour.

Who are some of your favorite non-GC Contenders over the years. Guys like Jens Voigt. I submit Thierry Marie his solo win on Bastille Day was one of my favorite rides of the Tour and his selfless support of Fignon is really what the Tour is all about.

A couple others on my list would be Dag-Otto Lauritzen, Sean Yates, Gilbert Duclos-Lasalle and Tommy Voekler. Trying to remember the name of the little Norwegian that used to escort LeMond through the Alps. He's on the list too.

edit: Just remembered the name - Atle Kvasvol

Magnus Backstedt (sp?)!

IIRC, the biggest man in any Grand Tour that he showed up for.

Oh yeah, and Jens Voigt.  How could you miss him?! ;)

I always kinda liked Ekimov..and Rubiera.  They did their jobs and Rubiera was a smart guy as well.  Jens Heppner was a good worker.  Not really an unsung hero, but I have a soft-spot for Andy Hampsten as well..
