The first time I heard about Kars was in an Orhan’s  Pamuk novel called Snow. He awarded Nobel prize in 2006.

It is a delicious novel about impossible love. The border city of Kars is one of the characters of the novel. Kars is in the far east of Turkey, very near to the always closed border with Armenia, and it is very important in Turkey recent history, as it is Sarikamis.

A very heavy snowfall, during several days, isolates Kars from rest of Turkey and the world. The political and religious tensions of modern Turkey explode in this tiny environment

The day I finished the novel I knew I want to know Kars and its region and I acknowledged that there would be good snow to ski.
