New guy from Colorado. Nice to meet you all.
My entire world revolved around skiing/the industry from 1984 through 2003. DId some racing in high school and college, but found that I would have had similar podium results just standing in the parking lot, having somone beat the cr@p out of me with a piece of bamboo (especially if it was a slalom event). Started out as a shop rat in high school at the 16th and Market Dave Cooks in Denver, then at Purgatory when in undergrad down in Durango. One summer I was called to help set up a new rental shop outside of Golden where one of the parnters was Hank Kashiwa. We hit it off and I was offered a job in the front office at Volant right out of school (right when the initial Bob Beattie re-org happened in 1989/90). I was there until we closed in 2001. Best time I have ever had at a job - those folks were like family. I still have all of my uniforms and a ton of "memorabilia". Went to Airwalk after that. Lasted two years untril they shut down - horrible place/company. At that time Id had enough of all things ski industry related. I went from skiing every chance I could to *maybe* twice a year.
When Shane passed away it led to some catching up with old pals, and that lit a small spark that got me going again. While I have no interest in ever being in the industry again, I was reminded how much I absolutely loved the ski culture. This year my kiddos (3 and 5) had thier first season of lessons. We were up every weekend for two months. Best time I have had on the hill in years. Cant wait to do it again next season!!
I joined up here as when I was looking at posts, there seems to be a very cool cross section of old school and new school folks. I hope to learn something about what works and what doesn't in todays product lines (although I still have 5-6 pair of new Volants, all mounted with EPB's and MRR's - yeah, they are a tad heavy....ha!!). I even see some familiar names from my era - so coool.
So, there you go. I hope I can contribute, but as you can see, my knowledge is extremely dated!
