What I found in this thread and in my research of the shoes/pedals debate is that there are lots of people who are loyal to their preference, even if they sell from both sides of the aisle. If its someone who prefers flat (like guys at the shop I bought my shoes from) they're going to tell you how to avoid getting your shins scraped by the pedals when you start out, and they're going to tell you the woes of clipless. If its someone who's got a preference to clipless, they'll find a horror story of someone who nearly ripped their shins off with the spiky pedals that go with the shoes.
Look at the debate in this thread. Josh (as an example) thinks anyone who's not riding clipless is wasting their time. Jaobrien (as an example) switched to Five Ten's and is eager to tell all the benefits of them.
When it comes down to it, figure out what works for you and do it.
