For my first 30 years of drivership all I was in was standards, and loved every minute, but then the traffic where I lived (more than one place) became horrific, and I ended up with automagics. The biggest problem I find is when the manufacturer maps the tranny's so they stay in the highest gear possible to please the EPA until you stuff your foot in the carburator, then they shift down 3-4 cogs and are just damned unseemly. My current car isn't offered with manual, so I'm shiftless (6 speed ZF), but between sport mode, dynamic mode and paddle shifters I have all the control I need.
I was invited to trash some shiny new cars a couple of months ago, and got to drive both the supercharged 6 and 8 F-types. No auto's offered (allegedly some are possibly coming), but again, whoa, you could do just about everything you wanted. 550HP in a small aluminum vehicle is a match made in heaven.
All that being said, there's not much like the satisfaction of rev matching, heel-toing etc on a nice twisty back road to put a big smile on your face
