After reading the articles about the former Olympic Venues and how they are in ruin, I'm not surprised that countries are thinking twice about seeking out the opportunity to host these events.

If you do a search, you'll find several article on venues in ruin.
This makes me wonder if former venues that have been kept in good repair may have a chance to host again and recoup some of the expense that was put out in preparation. I think of Vancouver and Salt Lake City as two such possibilities.
Perhaps either of these cities could get ready for another Olympics bid without too much effort, or at least without the extensive effort of someone who is new to the game.
FWIW, SLC, and especially Park City, has done a fairly good job of promoting their Olympic venue as a tourist attraction.
