I had a 74 Superbeetle as my first car. I remember driving back and forth to Camelback in it. I had a Barrecrafter SR25 ski rack and I think my 204cm Pre 1200SP's were longer than the car itself. I ran 15" studded snows and they went through almost anything. What the didn't have was heat, which was not uncommon for these. Actually one heater box was rusted open, the passenger rear. I did try to heat the car with Sterno once, that was a mistake, I put about 10 Sterno containers on the passenger side floor, yeah, that wasn't the best idea.
Interesting cars for sure; squirts ran off a hose connected to the spare tire. Guess tire pressure on your spare wasn't a priority to the designers. Not much in the way of power, but man that car was fun to beat on! FWIW, I don't think I've ever driven a car as aggressively as I did that '91 Golf. I used to routinely drive home through Harriman State Park on 106 between the Palisades Pkwy and Rt. 17 between 2-3am like a complete idiot. Pretty sure I had that thing on 3 wheels many times. (always sober, and the closest thing to a closed road course BTW)
I've never driven my Imprezas like that. Nice safe car with great traction, but not very exciting to drive. I'd be dangerous with a WRX...
Thats because they only tested tire pressure the stopped at low RPM's, not in actual real world driving conditions.
