Hate threads are unacceptable - Page 7

I'd bet that most of us are gainfully employed in careers that require constant email interactions. We know that extreme care is required to craft emails that avoid offense, and in fact, know that sometimes an email won't cut it, that hearing the inflections/tone/etc. are required for certain subjects. That we can be so careless in this arena when we are so painfully aware in our other world of those hazards is...hmmm...interesting.

No doubt, litterbug.

I agree with Seg as well. It is two sided.

The reader has an obligation to attempt to understand the writer.

Interesting thread with lots of great input!

The lack of body language does indeed cause some misunderstanding on occasion.  I try to remember to use the emoticons as a less than ideal means of compensating for that.  Still, nothing equals face-to-face...and probably never will.

As you said, though, it's also helpful if the reader gives the poster the benefit of the doubt whenever reasonably possible.  I mean if someone is at all the type to seek out offense, they're likely to find it quite easily, particularly on the 'net.

Interesting turn of phrase

Seek out and/or feign?

Edit: in response to cgeib:

Either or both, I guess. That's the other side: remember that everyone else is as fallible as you are--assuming you realize that you're fallible, too. If you don't, well, there's not much to be done by anyone else. Which is one thing that brings us to where we are today.

What gets lost is that the same goes when you're responding to someone who's intentionally being hostile, needling people, or otherwise seeking negative reactions. If I can just remember (as I often can't) that their 'issues' have nothing whatsoever to do with me I can keep calm. My problem comes when my concern about other people getting burned makes me feel justified in getting pissy with the offending party, who's perfectly happy to get into it. I try to remember that thinking I'm protecting other people is sometimes just an excuse to get into a fight, which makes things more complicated. Does it matter if my motivation is bad? Both the Talmud and Buddhist principles say yes, but I think Western culture wouldn't agree...

Oy, my dad was right, sometimes I think too much. Beating_A_Dead_Horse_by_livius.gif

I realize no such thing. I operate under the delusion that my skiing, choice of where to ski, gear choices, and pretty much every other aspect of my life is perfect, so naturally I am taking up for the rest of you when I rebuke someone who is being critical. You're welcome.:bs:

Fight sociopathy with sociopathy I always say. Where is this "high road" you speak of?;)

Relax. This is not a good/bad question, it's a warranty issue, no different than any manufacturer.

We're all getting together for a beer? Great!  But:  It better be the proper beer (i.e., the beer that I like), otherwise I will complain bitterly about how-everybody-sucks-but-why-don't-they-like-me.  Personally, my post count is really over 5000, except that I delete most of my comments before posting...

because:

Everybody (and everything) (except for me) sucks.

and:

Why doesn't everybody like me?

Funny thing is, when we do get together for beer, nothing weird ever happens.

(Except maybe beer pong.)

Nothing weird at all, well define "weird".

But I think we found a way to solve disagreements...

Yeah, the thread's passion has fizzled.  Pig's Ear Brown Ale, anybody?

Cheers!
