Am throwing ideas around for next year's trip (can never start planning too early!) because our local family passes also include week-long lift tickets at both Steamboat and Winter Park. So am looking for opinions and info for the two resorts. Am trying to understand the differences, pros/cons of each, since we've never been to Colorado, and chances are we'll be going to both anyways, not one instead of the other. And we'd be making this a driving road trip, so distance from airports or cities is not a factor.
-Parents: 1 Advanced skier, 1 Intermediate snowboarder
-Kids: 10 year old Intermediate skier, 8 year old Intermediate snowboarder
-We'd likely be renting a condo (ie-VRBO, thinking of staying in Steamboat Springs and Fraser, respectively). Slopeside accommodations aren't of paramount concern to us, if we can get a good deal on-resort then that's a bonus
-Nightlife isn't a priority at all. Around-town activities are ok, but not a necessity (ie-a trip to the hot springs and an occasional dinner out would be nice).
In particular we're thinking of some of the following things:
-I've heard WP has some lengthy flat run outs or traverses, which can be bad for boarders. True?
-crowds and lineups at SS vs WP?
-range of terrain available at each and suitability for intermediate and advanced skill levels?
-shuttle from town vs parking?
-is one worth staying longer vs the other?
-altitude (should we flatlanders start in SS at lower elevation and then head to WP later)?
-is 2nd and 3rd week of March too late to go (ie-are conditions still good for coverage, etc?)
-any other tidbits?
Thanks in advance.
