Cherry Blossoms along the Tidal Basin in Wash DC, 4/9/14

The Cherry Blossoms are late to bloom this year in DC due to our consistently cool winter that made for great skiing on man-made snow at our local mid-Atlantic ski areas and for the first time ever I skied locally in the months of Nov and Apr with excellent conditions and...but I digress.;)

So ski season is over for me and time to ramp up the bike commuting.  This morning, as usual, I rode by the Tidal Basin where the famous Washington Cherry Trees grow (a gift long ago from the Govt of Japan).  Here are a few pictures:

Here's a close-up of a Cherry Tree in pretty good blossoming mode.  That's the Pentagon in Arlington, VA in background.  I ride past there to get to DC for my job.

Part of my route is along this busy path near the Jefferson Memorial (to right).  The tidal basin and Washington Monument can be seen in the background.

The Cherry Blossoms around the Tidal Basin are not quite at peak yet, but maybe only a couple days from it. In the afternoon this area will be mobbed all week.

This was taken about 745AM.  I recognize those two as news anchors for our local Fox Channel 5 TV affiliate morning news show.  No crowds at this time to bother their live broadcast

thanks James!  Looks like Spring is here at last.

This morning I woke to the sounds of helicopters, ambulance and police sirens as the Franklin Regional HS in Murrysville, PA became the latest scene of school violence with 20 students stabbed.  The High School is one street over about 1/4 mile away from where we live...I like you morning better.

I love spring but, sorry to see winter go so quickly. It looks like my family and I are going to have to fly somewhere this spring to get some more turns in.

As for what happened in PA, extreme sorrow.

Hoping for better days for us all.

I really have to plan go see the blossoms in Washington.  A train ride in this time of year would be so sweet.

You should go, especially if you never have. D.C. is too hot for me in the summer, and kind of bleak in the winter, but it's just lovely all decked out with cherry blossoms in the spring.
