Wolf Ridge NC - WTH is going on up there?!?

Saw on another site that the upper lodge burned to the ground:

Then a day or two later the owners are sued in Federal Court for breach of an agreement to sell:

Implications of questionable business dealings, etc. Apparently this place has been poorly run for years and there was optimism that the new owners aka "plaintiffs" were going to turn it around.

Can any of the NC locals elaborate?

It's really a beginner focused ski hill.  I've never skied there.  Looking like I never will now...:(

Fair to say that the recent history at Wolf is complicated.  The regional ski forum, SkiSoutheast, will be keeping track of what happens going forward.  The suit was filed in late February, not after the fire.

The fire was in the middle of the night after a snowstorm.  By the time firefighters could get there, the building was engulfed.  There was vandalism the week before.  The investigation is being led by law enforcement, not the fire department.

The situation is every other year or so, the owner of the resort Orville English takes lots of money from perspective buyers, all that can run the resort better than him, and has them removed from the property by the crooked sheriffs that are relatives and/or are being paid off. The cases (there have been several) gets tied up in the courts and become too expensive to fight. The end result is always the same, someone operated the resort for a season lost all there money and Orville English ends up keeping the resort. He is an evil drunk ans hillbilly gangster con man. At least this is what I have heard from an Wolf Ridge insider.

I remember that lodge being a really nice log structure.  It was beautiful.  Too bad this happened.

Very wealthy people using their financial superiority to take advantage of others for various objectives is nothing unique to ski resorts and is quite common in rural, small town areas. In the bigger, more heavily populated locales they have to be in cahoots with other rich folks.  Too bad when it wrecks a place others used to enjoy skiing at.
