F1 2014

New rules, new cars, and Sebastian Vettel with a chance to keep breaking records. I'm up watching the Aussie Grand Prix (or at least a few laps) after midnight here.

I recorded it and will be watching in a few hours. I have to say though that I like the sound of turbos. The engine itself, not so much, 15K RPM sounds pretty pedestrian.

Really hoping for a revival for Williams and a return to dominance for McLaren.

I'll not spoil it for you then, but the best drivers went out really early due to the reliability issues of the new car. One engineer I saw quoted coming into the season said he could see a DNF rate of around 50% this year because of mechanical issues with the new cars. Wasn't quite that bad yesterday, but wasn't pretty either.

Red Bull owner says (my interpretation):  If you don't rule in my favor, I'm taking my ball and going home.  Waaaaa!

Well this has been one dead thread this season.  I guess no one wants to talk about Mercedes, eh?

So what do y'all think about Nico's move on Lewis on lap two at Spa?  Looked like dirty pool to me.  Hate to see a driver receive a vocal thumbs down from the crowd at the podium ceremonies but seems to me he had it coming.

It was good to see Kimi have a decent result but what the hell?  Do y'all think he's giving his best effort?

How about Leigh Diffey's telecast opening color commentary?  IMO dude just has poor command of the English language.  They're typically full of contradictions, cliches and uncalled for bluster.  Poor replacement for Bob V. if you ask me.  Get him a writer or better yet, let Sam Posey do the opening.

Regarding the world feed, I loved that they stayed with the battle for third in the closing laps.  That was some awesome racing.  I thought the timing stats told the whole story about Nico chasing down Daniel in vein.

So, who do y'all think is currently the best driver in F1?  In the past I'd have said that Sebastian and Lewis belonged in that conversation but it'd be hard to make that argument at the moment.  So, Daniel?  Nico?  My vote has to go to Fernando.  He's way down the list of my fave pilots but geez he just seems to wring everything there is out of that Ferrari.

I'd say pure racing incident. We've seen many times where drivers were able to run through a whole series of turns side by side. Rosberg backed out and Ham could have given more room.

Best driver - maybe I'd vote for Bottas.

Rosberg was being petulant..it's ridiculous for team-mates to take each other out.  I get it, racing, but it's very bush league.  It's a Schumacher-like incident..I'm leading in the championship, so if we both go out, I'm still leading.  I never liked Hamilton much, he always seemed to be the weak-minded child..but honestly, he's taking it pretty well and I feel like he's a much more mature person now..and Rosberg seems to be the child now.  I suppose he's desperate for his Championship and will stop at nothing to win..and many champions are like that I suppose, starting with Senna.

I think Kimi isn't finding the Ferrari to his liking..he's very finicky about the brakes and now he has even more to complain about with the increased KERS energy recovery.  It looks like it's getting more to his style but I don't think he's driving around it quite like Fernando.  I think Fernando is still quite a racer..never gives up..fights with all he's got.  I'm surprised by Ricciardo..he's out-qualifying Seb consistently.  Seb was saying it's not fair to compare because he's had a lot of reliability issues..but I don't know..I think he's legit being outdriven.  Which I kinda like because he reminds me of a spoiled brat whenever I hear him speak.

Bottas is a great show..I really like that Williams is back in contention.  They're a great team and strictly racers.  Amazing what a guy like Pat Symonds and a Mercedes engine can do for you.  I also love the Martini colours..wish it was a bit more prominent actually.  :-)  Surprised McLaren are rather lame..despite the Mercedes engine.

Curious about Verstappen..good connections and money I guess.  He seems to be fast in F3..not saying he shouldn't be there..but awfully young.  That's the trend though I guess..younger and flashier.

The pay drivers continue to crash into people..

IMO he certainly belongs in the discussion but do you really think his star would be shining as bright if say, Fernando was his teammate?  I'm super glad to see Williams doing well again and I think VB is another fast Finn with a bright future in F1 but I'm thinking it's the car/team at least as much as the driver.

Really enjoy the Martini colors in F1 too.

So... Suzuka.

Quite a race right up until Jules Bianchi had his big shunt. The last 8 or so laps could have really been fun. I was wondering how HAM's brakes would hold up to the end of the race. Would ROS be able to bring it back? Would the rain build? Would BUT be able to hold off the Red Bulls?

My driver of the day - BUT.

Well, Button has that easy, fluid style that works in the rain.  Not always the best style but good in rain.  I suspect there was going to be a tire change coming up anyway..they were still on inters..and it was getting dark.  Probably wouldn't have gone full-length anyway.

Terrible injury..so few injuries in F1 these days we forget how dangerous it can be.  I see Alonso simply refused to start.

This isn't really about F1, but folks who follow F1 might enjoy this article of mine just published in the October issue of Victory Lane.

How'd you guys like Quali yesterday. VET out in round two - WTF?

As far as this race goes no spoilers obviously, but I'm liking the outfits on the grid girls. :) Also, props to the broadcast team for mentioning Crimea, Ukraine, MH17 several times. I'm sure you can only say so much when you have Will Buxton in Russia.

The Sochi track is a pleasant surprise have to say.  It's really not bad.  I don't think the car agrees with Vettel this year..and he's leaving at the end of the year..so he may be mailing it in to some degree.   Williams continue to surprise, good for them!

I was joking at work, the stands are packed!  Every one of them trucked in at gun-point by Putin..  :D

Anybody watch FP2 today. Crazy attrition. Think it'll be like that during the race? (I wouldn't mind seeing HAM's car on fire.....)

You know, I've come around to Hamilton a bit.  He seems to be a lot less child-like this year.  I'm ok if he wins again, he's worked for it this year and will have won fair and square.

I wonder if Kimi will get lost with the new pit entrance...  :D

I'm more worried with the general state..2 teams out..Caterham looking for money via crowdsourcing..really?  Asking normal peeps for cash?  While others rake in billions??  Ferget that.  That's like the NFL asking for handouts from people to keep Jax going because the owners don't have enough money.  Three more teams heading that way, maybe next year.  If I hear Bernie say "beggars buckets" again I may have to go run him over myself.  He is responsible for F1, good and bad.
