ETU- The game is afoot! (The night before)

Well, here we go!
Bob, Tom, and I arrived in Burlington, Vermont yesterdy afternoon, during a torrential downpour. It was really bucketing down! With only Bob experiencing any airline hassles (showing up about 2 hours later than scheduled- we told him not to go through Chicago...), we collected our bags and jumped in the rental van. Having followed last weeks major storm/snowfall news with great interest, you can imagine our thoughts. :

We first headed up to "epic's" home, a few miles outside Stowe. Bonnie, his wife had a wonderful meal prepared, and we sat around talking for several hours. Then it was off to the hotel, and bed. Major bummer- no phone jacks in the rooms, so no Internet connection! :

The next morning, we ran into cgeib and Lori, along with a couple of their friends. They had apparently arrived only a short time before we did. Chris had his room looking like a ski shop- tuning bench, iron smoking, gear spread out everywhere. In short, it looked like my room at the Brighton Academy.

We headed up to the ski hill to meet skiswift, ant, and epic for breakfast. They gave us the tour of what was open, as it was very windy and lightly snowing. Everything we had ever been told about the NE was happening. We skied for about 3 hours, familiarizing ourselves with the layout of the area, and the logistics required to move around. Then, once again, we headed back to the hotel to finalize some plans and take care of some last minute details.

This evening, we met the other coaches for a dinner at the Whip, a nice place for a good meal. While getting to know each other, we went over the details of the program for the next couple of days and answered a multitude of questions they had about the event, and EpicSki in general. After dinner, we joined quite a few Bears at The Shed for a couple of beers. Bonni, skier J, kieli and her friend M, James Deluxe and his new wife Juliet, skierteach, newskier, ant, springhill crazy, and a few others were on hand to meet us. The energy and enthusiasm was as strong as expected! With talk focusing on tomorrows skiing, and last season's Academy, new friendships were established, and old friendships renewed.
By the way- Bob Barnes was voted "most unlike his online personna", as one Bear said... "from the way he writes, I thought he would be about 60 years old, and be very professorial". :

At about 11:30, it was time to call it a night, so back to the hotel (only a few hundred yards away) to clean the skis, and hit the sack. Tom and Bob have long since passed out, so I'm sitting in the lobby of the hotel (only phone line) writing this note to everyone.

It's snowing lightly outside, and getting progressively colder. Tomorrow could be a fantastic day! We'll fill you in on the day's happenings tomorrow night!

Ric, It's great to hear from you and also about what's happening at the ETU. It sounds like you are burning the candle at both ends. I hope you (and the others) can send more "live" reports. Thanks!

I wish y'all the best!

I had fully intended to be there, but the allocated $$$ got re-allocated to my Park City thanksgiving trip.

Can't wait for the updates and to hear how the weekend unfolds.

Hi everyone!

This is Bonni using skierteachs computer.....I thought I'd give ya'll an update before I hit the sack.

It was colder than a prison matron's stare today. 2 degrees at the top of the gondola....but for some reason I didn't get all that cold (adrenaline and fear, I suppose).

We learned a lot, laughed a lot, went where no man should go alone, and guess what? We're doing it again tomorrow!

There's a big winter storm coming in tomorrow afternoon, so we're planning to ski all day and drive home while it's snowing hard....Murphy rides again.

Right now I'm sitting in Skierteach and Springhill Crazie's room, there's a fire blazing and it's very cool to meet Bears for the first time and ski with them and chat the night away. One of the best things about Epic events is the friends you make!

PS. I found out it really REALLY hurts to put a ski pole in
Front of you, angled at very upper thigh height, jammed into the snow, while you are still moving forward. Over and out.

Hi! This is Skierteach now! What she said! There were some great laughs today, Bonni even laughed about the pole, though that must have really hurt. A lot of learning took place and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

I've met a lot of great people! It's been fun.
