ok so im looking to buy a pair of volkl vwerks and possibly a pair of mantras if the price is right. i demo'd the v werks in 176 and mantra in 177. the only reason i chose that size was bc those were the longest size the shop had available. im 5'11 190lb advanced east coast skier. im a very aggressive skier that makes mostly high speed medium to long radius turns.  naturally edge grip and stability are very important to me here on the ice coast....now, as i shop around i am getting conflicting suggestions about what length to buy in each of these skis.  in the v werks i've been told to size down and go with the 176 because of the carbon construction makes them much stiffer than the normal 176cm ski. on the other hand i've had people tell me to go with the 181 and not to worry bout it bc i have plenty of weight and aggressive enough to flex them... i've also been told to go with the 184 in the mantra for my size but then was told by others to go with the 177 here on the east bc it we don't have enough mountain for the 184. so, im just torn on what length is right for me in either ski.

What did you think when you demoed?
I think you'd be on the V most of the time back east and I'd stick with the 176.
I would also go with the 184 Mantra. It's not that big for the east and will be much better if you travel out west.

when i demo'd i really liked the v werks. i was actually ready to just purchase them on the spot. UNTIL i rode the mantra. then i realized there was a level of stability and edge hold with the mantra that the v werks didn't QUITE have. also, there was an occasional time where i was wanting another gear with the vwerks. but that was a rare occasion. so that is why i started contemplating the 181 in the v werks for the added stability, edge, and speed.  i also really enjoyed the 177 in the mantra, but they did feel "shorter" than a 177. the only reason i ask about the mantra cuz every shop or person i have talked to has pretty much said 184 in the mantra. BUT alot of them said 176 in the v werks. so i was confused why i was getting pointed shorter on the v and longer on the mantra and i personally was thinking opposite. but maybe if i had a chance to demo the two in the other links i may love the 184 mantra and prefer the 176 v werks...i dunno...lol.

with all that said i still also keep getting alot of suggestions to go with the kastle mx88. from what i've read i think i would llike them too. but there is NOWHERE here on the east where i live to demo those. and one of the shop owners, told me to hold off till next year bc he just rode some of next years skis and thnks ill like the rossi exp 88 with the new construction. so that added to my confusion as well. but i have a chance to grab the v werks for a really good price and i KNOW i like them. so there will b no suprises and it seems like the safe bet. but i cant help but wonder?

I have found that in my limited experience lately that it is better to size up than down.  Especially if you are advanced and aggressive.  I cannot comment on the skis per se, but your style seems like you could handle a few extra cm.  The older Mantras sound like they would be right up your alley in my humble opinion.

Concur on going longer if aggressive.  Also, in general, skis with rocker (Mantra has tip rocker) will ski "shorter" than the same/similar ski in that size without rocker.  Go with the 184 Mantra.

thanks for the input guys!!sounds like the 184 mantra is def the size for me to go with. now its just finding a good deal on a pair. the v werks is proving to be tough to find in an 181 too....seems like all the shops are carrying the 176 but not the 181. hmmm!
