Keep stones clean???

How do you guys clean your diamond and ceramic stone files? The black stuff from abs and metal debres won't come off... I tried the hand, file card, scrub, dishwasher methods so far with little success. As far as ceramic stones, I can sand them down but am wondering there is a better, non abrasive way.

I usually give mine a scrub with a toothbrush and base cleaner/wax remover.

I use naptha from the hardware store.  Pretty much the same thing as the base cleaner/wax remover, except cheaper.

Thanks for the responses.  I was curious about this as well.

As above base cleaner first, then I use "Barkeepers Friend" cleanser. This is available at your local supermarket near the dish soap. Make a paste out of the powder (toothpaste consistency) and rub with your fingers on the diamond stones. A little goes a long way- but work it in good- you really can't overwork it. Rinse well, and dry with a towel. You may get a slight haze type residue, if this concerns you then wash them with some dish soap or Simple Green. This removes most of the buildup and crud.
