April week w/kids: Vail-Beaver Creek & Summit County vs Aspen-Snowmass vs Alta-Snowbird, A Users Guide - Page 3

So surely but steadily recommendations converging to Aspen/Snowmass over Little Cottonwood, and Vail/BCreek this pre-easter week. Snow then will be a gamble I know but one can hope for some luck. Copper is tough since I do not really want to drive and want a good town sort of feel for 8 days of skiing - give or take. Thx

If you don't want to drive, Summit Co keeps you sleeping at high elevation and Breck has the only real "town". "Eight days in Breck" sounds more like one of those shows where a 20 something ends up in a foreign prison than a family vacation.

It sounds like Snowmass is your bet this year...and sans driving the bus to Aspen looks pretty good...

FYI, the Snowmass Village really isn't much bigger than the Copper Village.  Both are nice, but too small for 8 days if you want to go out to eat every night.  If you cook in your condo a few nights they are both doable, otherwise you'll want to head to town.

There is a free bus from Copper to Frisco (very quick) and to Breck (longer and requires switching busses).  See the schedules here:

http://www.co.summit.co.us/index.aspx?NID=586

I was at Snowmass Sunday and it got up to 53 degrees at the base.   There were still fantastic winter conditions on the upper mountain if you found the right exposures.   It's a fantastic spring skiing mountain and will likely have much better snow conditions than Vail or AltaBird in late April.  Copper is a little higher overall, but either is a great choice.

Eight days is a lot.  You could spend 8 days at Copper, but why not have 4 mountains to choose from with 2-3 times the terrain?  Snowmass is a better choice, IMHO.

As Tball says, the village at Snowmass is pretty small, but the bus ride to Aspen is free and takes about 30 minutes.  It's easy peasy, and gives you something to do after skiing.  Just walking around Aspen can be pretty interesting (some might say surreal).

And while you can ride the bus to Frisco, Frisco is not Aspen.  Getting to Breck is more difficult and it still isn't Aspen.

Finally, while it got to 53 at the base of Snowmass on Sunday, it got to 51 at Copper's mid mountain (10,500 feet!) on Monday.  We are likely into the freeze thaw cycle in Colorado.  So far it looks like we are getting a couple of refreshes a week (snowed on Tuesday and is forecast to snow on Saturday).  I don't think there's too much of an issue yet with differences in snow quality.

Excellent.  I look forward to your trip report.  I really enjoyed the pictures and video of your trips to Lech-Zurs and Zermatt.  Aspen really is the best of Colorado.

Took the wife to Snowmass, parked at the Divide lot and went up Campground. Only car in the lot.
Skied the Sams Knob's groomers and then swung by the Lemon Drop Cougar Party.
Always need a plan B.

Then came back and caught a few buckets.

Last ride real time.

And now the real reason for Snowmass finally emerges.

I noticed that side-bar too...hmmm..well I am of the vintage of said felines..

Great pics, and will try to catch Highlands first two days. Thanks and hoping of coure my boy has a blast.

This thread has some hard-core substance about Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, Alta, Snowbird, Aspen-Highlands and Snowmass.

Others should use this as a review/reference.

Funny no one mentions Ajax !

Ajax is a great mountain as well.  Skiing the Bell is always fun, and if you want long moderately steep groomers it's fantastic.  Since you are there for 8 days, make sure you hit at least Ajax, Highlands, and Snowmass.  Sample, Taste, and Report!

I too like Ajax a lot, but it's definitely my 3rd favorite of the Aspen mountains behind Highlands and Snowmass.  So while it's a great mountain, it suffers from being in the shadow of two amazing mountains.

Have fun!  Maybe change the title of the thread to add the other resorts to help folks searching?  Look for "Edit Thread" up there somewhere.

Here's a little video stoke from Highlands on Saturday with a foot of new snow (no reason it can't snow that much in late April too):

And the view from the top of Highland Bowl:

Not everyone can edit thread titles.  The thread is tagged for all the key places, so should show up in most searches as well as on the related Epicski resort pages.

Cool video, like the shots of SM, AH ... SM looks nice and uncrowded..! As does Highlands but last weekend should be fun.

Thread title should be "Users Guide to Pre-Easter skiing+kids, 7+ days: Vail-Beaver Creek area & Summit County vs Aspen-Snowmass vs Alta-Snowbird" "

Moderator please change, as thread starter, that would be a humble request.

Changed the title, but did a little editing to make the resort names fit.  Does it look okay?

Following the thread with interest.  Just got the 2014-15 MCP and intend to use the added third day at Aspen/Snowmass late season next season.  My non-skiing husband has a business conference in Denver in late March so that is likely to be the start of a Colorado/Utah ski safari before my annual get together with friends at Alta Lodge in April.

I'm looking forward to some updates on your trip.  I am assuming that you spent the weekend closing down Highlands.  Judging from the new snow reported at Ajax and Snowmass, it looks like it was dumping yesterday on closing day.  Looks like today and tomorrow are going to be ideal with the new snow and colder temps to preserve some of it for a bit.

LofC - the trip was the best we have taken and we have traveled for two guys - son and Dad (tagging along!) quite a bit skiing since '08 when we hit the road on ski adventures. Anyway, detailed TR will follow later but Bob Barnes took us to the 'place' and I just posted a sampler TR here in TR section.

http://www.epicski.com/t/127610/aspen-snowmass-april-11-night-till-april-20-departure-with-an-11-year-old-first-cut

The counsel and debate on this THREAD got us there, and was spot on - overall best ski trip we can remember!

More details to follow later. Back to work now!

Best and many thanks folks
